Prostate Cancer Screening and PSA Testing in Sangareddy
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men globally and is increasingly diagnosed in Indian men, particularly those over 50. One of its most challenging features is that early-stage prostate cancer rarely causes any symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, the cancer may be at an advanced stage. This makes screening an important tool for men in the higher-risk age group.
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a blood test that measures a protein produced by the prostate gland. An elevated PSA does not automatically mean cancer, several non-cancerous conditions including benign prostate enlargement and prostatitis also raise PSA levels. However, a significantly elevated or rising PSA warrants further investigation including specialist evaluation and, when indicated, a biopsy.
At KBR Life Care Hospitals, Sangareddy, PSA testing and prostate cancer risk assessment are available. We provide men with balanced, informed counselling about the benefits and limitations of screening before the test is done, helping each person make an informed decision about whether to proceed.
Types & Causes
Localised Prostate Cancer
Confined within the prostate gland; often asymptomatic; highly treatable with surgery, radiotherapy, or active surveillance
Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer
Extends beyond the prostate capsule but has not spread to distant sites; requires combined treatment approaches
Metastatic Prostate Cancer
Spread to lymph nodes or bones (most commonly the spine and pelvis); becomes hormone-responsive treatment priority
High-Grade PIN (Precancerous Change)
Prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia found on biopsy; indicates elevated risk of subsequent prostate cancer and needs follow-up
Symptoms to Watch For
Early-stage prostate cancer often causes no symptoms at all
Advanced or locally aggressive cancer may cause urinary frequency, urgency, or weak stream
Blood in the urine or semen in some cases
Erectile dysfunction or pain in the pelvic area in locally advanced disease
Bone pain, particularly in the lower back, hips, or thighs, if metastatic spread has occurred
Unexplained weight loss or fatigue in advanced disease
When to See a Doctor
- Men over 50 years who want to discuss PSA screening
- Men over 45 with a first-degree relative (father or brother) who had prostate cancer
- Any man with a rising PSA on serial tests, even within the normal range
- PSA level above 4 ng/mL (or above 3 ng/mL in men under 60 with risk factors)
- New lower urinary tract symptoms in a man over 50, even if benign prostate enlargement is more likely
- Any man with bone pain and a prior raised PSA
How We Diagnose
- PSA blood test: baseline measurement with serial monitoring over time; free-to-total PSA ratio where indicated
- Digital rectal examination (DRE): assesses prostate size, texture, and any nodules
- Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) of the prostate: the current standard before biopsy to identify suspicious areas
- Transrectal or transperineal prostate biopsy: tissue sampling to confirm or exclude cancer when PSA and MRI indicate concern
- Bone scan and CT staging if biopsy confirms cancer, to assess for spread
Our Treatment Approach
- Active surveillance: for low-risk, localised cancer in older men; close monitoring with serial PSA, MRI, and repeat biopsies to watch for progression
- Radical prostatectomy: surgical removal of the prostate; curative intent for localised disease in younger, fit men
- Radiotherapy (external beam or brachytherapy): a curative alternative to surgery for localised disease
- Hormone therapy (androgen deprivation): reduces testosterone driving cancer growth; used for advanced or metastatic disease
- Chemotherapy and newer targeted agents for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
- Palliative care and bone-targeted therapy for symptomatic bone metastases
