Liver Disease Diagnosis and Treatment in Sangareddy

The liver is the largest internal organ and performs over 500 vital functions, including detoxification, protein synthesis, bile production, and metabolism of nutrients and medications. Liver disease is increasingly common in India, and the population in Sangareddy and Telangana faces a specific set of risk factors, including a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes, obesity, alcohol consumption, and hepatitis B infection.

Many forms of liver disease are silent in the early stages. Fatty liver, for example, may be detected incidentally on an ultrasound done for an unrelated reason, with the patient having no symptoms at all. By the time symptoms like jaundice, abdominal swelling, or fatigue appear, the disease may have progressed significantly. Early detection and proactive management are critical to preventing cirrhosis and liver failure.

At KBR Life Care Hospitals, our gastroenterology team offers comprehensive liver evaluation including blood tests, imaging, and specialist consultation. We provide evidence-based management for fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and early cirrhosis, with onward referral to hepatology for advanced cases.

Types & Causes

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

The most common liver condition globally and a growing epidemic in Telangana, closely linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Fat accumulates in liver cells without significant alcohol intake. Can progress through non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis if not managed.

Alcoholic Liver Disease

Ranges from alcoholic fatty liver (reversible with abstinence) to alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Regular heavy alcohol use is a leading cause of preventable liver disease. Even moderate drinking can accelerate liver damage in those with underlying fatty liver or viral hepatitis.

Viral Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is endemic in India, with Telangana carrying a significant disease burden. Chronic hepatitis B causes progressive liver inflammation, cirrhosis, and substantially increases the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Effective antiviral treatment can suppress the virus and prevent progression.

Viral Hepatitis C

Transmitted through blood contact, including sharing needles or exposure through unsterilised medical equipment. Chronic hepatitis C leads to fibrosis and cirrhosis over decades. Highly effective oral antiviral treatments now achieve cure rates above 95%.

Hepatitis A and E

Transmitted through contaminated water and food. Outbreaks of hepatitis A and E occur in Telangana, particularly during and after monsoon floods when water supplies are compromised. These are usually self-limiting but can cause acute liver failure in pregnant women (hepatitis E) and immunocompromised patients.

Cirrhosis

The end stage of various liver diseases, characterised by replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue. Causes include chronic hepatitis B or C, long-term alcohol use, and untreated NASH. Cirrhosis leads to reduced liver function, portal hypertension, varices, and ascites. Early detection and management of the underlying cause can slow or halt progression.

Symptoms to Watch For

Persistent fatigue and general weakness

Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss

Nausea or vomiting

Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)

Dark-coloured urine (tea-coloured)

Pale or clay-coloured stools

Abdominal swelling caused by fluid accumulation (ascites)

Swelling of the legs and ankles

Itching of the skin without a rash

Easy bruising or unusual bleeding

Confusion or difficulty thinking clearly (hepatic encephalopathy in advanced disease)

When to See a Doctor

  • You have been told your liver function tests are abnormal
  • Ultrasound has shown fatty liver or liver enlargement
  • You have been diagnosed with diabetes, obesity, or metabolic syndrome (routine liver assessment recommended)
  • You have a known history of hepatitis B or C that is not under active medical care
  • Jaundice develops at any age
  • Abdominal swelling, especially if increasing rapidly
  • You consume alcohol regularly and have developed any digestive or fatigue symptoms
  • There is a family history of liver disease or liver cancer

How We Diagnose

  • Liver function tests (LFTs): ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, albumin
  • Complete blood count to assess for anaemia and low platelet count (suggestive of cirrhosis)
  • Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C antibody tests
  • Hepatitis A and E serology when acute hepatitis is suspected
  • Fasting glucose, HbA1c, and lipid profile to assess metabolic risk factors
  • Ultrasound of the liver to assess size, echogenicity, and detect fatty infiltration or nodules
  • Fibroscan (transient elastography) or serum fibrosis markers to assess the degree of liver fibrosis non-invasively
  • Liver biopsy in selected cases where diagnosis or stage is uncertain

Our Treatment Approach

  • Lifestyle modification for NAFLD: weight loss of 7 to 10% body weight significantly reduces liver fat, achieved through dietary changes and regular exercise
  • Strict alcohol cessation for alcoholic liver disease
  • Antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B (tenofovir, entecavir) to suppress viral replication and prevent progression
  • Directly acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for hepatitis C, achieving cure in most patients within 12 weeks
  • Hepatitis A and B vaccination for at-risk individuals
  • Management of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia to reduce metabolic liver damage
  • Diuretics and dietary sodium restriction for ascites (fluid accumulation)
  • Beta-blockers to reduce portal hypertension and risk of variceal bleeding
  • Endoscopic band ligation for oesophageal varices at risk of bleeding
  • Regular surveillance ultrasound and AFP testing every 6 months in cirrhotic patients to detect liver cancer early
  • Liver transplant evaluation for end-stage liver disease
